Microbiology, Biochemistry & Chemistry (MiBiC)

B.Sc with MiBiC is a combination where students get a chance to learn Biochemistry, a subject that is based on the foundations of Chemistry along with Microbiology, a different subject in advanced biological sciences.

This course helps students in understanding the basic principles of microbiology and applications of microbiology for diagnosis of diseases and provides an understanding of Biomolecules and their role in biochemical processes in the human body to understand molecular basis of cell function. They also acquire knowledge on clinical biochemistry test to assess the incidence and control of various diseases.

First Year
In first year, students are introduced to the fascinating world of microorganisms by highlighting on the milestone achievements in microbiology, exploring them to various aspects of microscopy, sterilization classifications and characterizations by different organisms. They learn the basic concepts in virology, mycology and essentials of biomolecules. In biochemistry, they learn about biomolecules their structure and function, about nature of enzymes and their mechanism. In chemistry, students study reaction intermediates in carbon chemistry; saturated and unsaturated alicyclic compounds basic knowledge on physical principles in various states of matter and understanding the structure and behavior of S & P block elements.

Second Year
In second year, students in microbiology are introduced to concepts of nutrition, growth and intermediary metabolism in microorganisms and microbial genetics. In biochemistry students learn energy transformations occurring in the cell. They also learn the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipid and nitrogen compounds. In chemistry students learn the synthesis and characteristics of carbon compounds with various functional groups. In Inorganic Chemistry they deal with trends in the properties of transitional and inner transitional elements, various theories of bonding in metals. They also learn principles of physical chemistry and their applications in phase equilibria and electro chemical cells.

Third Year
In third year microbiology, emphasis is given on applied aspects like immunology, industrial, medical, food and environmental microbiology. In biochemistry, students will learn about physiology of digestion, cardiac cycles, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission, and vision. Students also learn the nutritive aspects with RDA and vitamin roles and disorders and how it deals with clinical aspects of various disorders and basics of human immune system and also learn about gene, its organization in prokaryotes and eukaryotes followed by the transcription and translation along with its regulation. They will also learn the construction of r-DNA and necessary tools for r-DNA production. In Chemistry, students learn about the study of various theories of bonding in inorganic complexes and their application in the study of metallo-porphyrins, synthesis and chemical properties of bio-molecules. Study of reaction rates, feasibility and factors affecting reactions. They also learn about the separation techniques and physico-chemical methods of analysis.

Course Outcome
At the end of this course the student will be equipped with the practical and theoretical knowledge, which helps the student to join a PG programme in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Genetics, Chemistry, Environmental sciences, Nutrition, Clinical biochemistry, microbiology. They can also go for integrated Ph. D. The student can also built their career in management, IT, Mass communication literature. After this course the student will gain technical skills like diagnostic laboratory techniques in microbiology, biochemistry and chemistry to get employment in clinical division of hospitals, diagnostic institutes and drug manufacturing companies.

Eligibility
Candidates who have passed the Intermediate Public Examination conducted by the Board of Intermediate Education, A.P., or any other examination recognized as equivalent thereto with BiPC with aggregate marks prescribed by the university and college are eligible for admission to B.Sc.(Mi.Bi.C) 1 Year Course.
