Biotechnology, Biochemistry & Chemistry (BtBiC)

Biotechnology is all set to become one of the most important fields of this century. Aurora is one of the first colleges in the state to have started this course.

This course will help in providing an understanding of normal biochemical process in human body and to promote an understanding and appreciation of the role of chemistry in modern society, to acquire the ability to apply chemical principles and techniques in various other disciplines and to make the student to understand the technological applications of DNA and biological molecules for manipulating biological molecules.

First Year
In first year biotechnology, students learn basics of cell structure, laws of inheritance, tools of inheritance, DNA duplication and basic concepts of biostatistics and bioinformatics. In biochemistry, they learn about biomolecules their structure and function, and about the name of enzymes and their mechanism. In chemistry, students study reaction intermediates in carbon chemistry; saturated and unsaturated alicyclic compounds Basic knowledge on physical principles in various states of matter and understanding the structure and behavior of S &P block elements.

Second Year
In second year biotechnology students deal with structure and functions of biomolecules, the biocatalysts-enzymes, and gain knowledge about metabolism and energy production and transfer. They gain basic knowledge of microorganisms growth and kinetics and also deal with spectroscopy, chromatography etc. In biochemistry students learn energy transformations occurring in the cell. They also learn the metabolism of carbohydrates, lipid and nitrogen compounds. In chemistry students learn the synthesis and characteristics of carbon compounds with various functional groups. In organic chemistry they deal with trends in the properties of transitional and inner transitional elements, various theories of bonding in metals. Principles of physical chemistry and their applications in phase equilibria and electro chemical cells.

Third Year
In third year biotechnology, students learn about the gene, its organization in prokaryotes and eukaryotes followed with the transcription and translation along with its regulation. They will also learn the construction of r-DNA and necessary tools for r-DNA production and about human defense system-cells, organelles types and disorders. In biochemistry, students will learn about physiology of digestion, cardiac cycles, muscle contraction, nerve impulse transmission, and vision. Students also learn the nutritive aspects with RDA and vitamin roles and disorders and how It deals with clinical aspects of various disorders and basics of human immune system. In chemistry, students learn about the study of various theories of bonding in inorganic complexes and their application in the study of metallo-porphyrins, synthesis and chemical properties of bio-molecules .study of reaction rates, feasibility and factors affecting reactions. They also learn about the separation techniques and physico-chemical methods of analysis.

Course Outcome
Students will have the knowledge of basics of all sciences which will guide them to pursue innovative and interdisciplinary research. They will have clear frame of live processes-the metabolism and its clinical aspects. The students will have clear knowledge of natural elements, chemical nature and their role.

The students will be equipped with various practical skills useful in day to day life and research like colorimetry, electrophoresis, PCR, microscopy, spectroscopy etc.

Course will end up with many open problems of the sciences which can be taken up by them for research. They will be well versed with basics of mathematics, computer applications and bioinformatics. They will be guided how to do a project and submission of project report. They will be equipped with good communication skills, presentation skills. The students can take up P.G. course in Biotechnology /Genetics /Chemistry /Biochemistry or take up integrated PhD or can be placed in industry.

Eligibility
Candidates who have passed the Intermediate Public Examination conducted by the Board of Intermediate Education, A.P., or any other examination recognized as equivalent there to with BiPC with aggregate marks prescribed by the university and college are eligible for admission to B.Sc (Bt.Bi.C) 1 Year Course.
